"Step by Step" a new concept of jazz vocal coaching

A new concept? What for?
During my ten years of teaching praxis I had to notice over and over again, that special important aspects of the musical education are not fulfilled at single lessons . So it was often faced with the situation of a student, not being able to find his/her individual key, to transpose their notes correctly or even to understand the system of symbols contained in the notes. While rehearsals we found out, that they had difficulties with the technique on stage (micro, amp. etc.) to communicate with the musicians and to hold their ground in front of public. They were made absolutely insecure by the live situation regarding timing and improvisation in which there already used to be good somehow. This handicap often causes problems between newcomers and their older colleagues concerning acknowledgment

Due to this experiences I had the idea to extend the teaching concept of vocal coaching by several subjects. - A further target of the concept is a link between the musical basic education an the -higher education

Vocal Coaching in single lessons:

Of course the individual encouragement of each of my students at high standard is the main point of my concept. Nothing can replace a solid voice education or breathing technique, or the acquirement of an individual repertoire. The ideal sound of every different genre represents a very special effort to the singing voice. Specifics are transmitted besides the singing techniques as basics and using texts (prosodic features).

Rhythmic and Improvisation Workshop:
Several year ago I initiated this alternative kind of lesson. Once in a month students get a course in means of a workshop, were things are worked at, which are partly neglecting single courses or are simply not possible to be taught Part of it is to connect the training of several singing functions with aspects of the jazz music; we learn to train together different sorts of improvisation techniques and styles (Swing, Blues, Latin ...) as well as the typical jazz timing, phrasing and rhythmic we work at voicing and polyphony by interactive rhythmic and improvisation games. There always grow benefit able working relations at the workshops; from duets up to seven headed mini-jazz-choirs there have always been any different kinds of formations. This is a great opportunity to create within the scope of sessions and concerts.

Live-Music-Training for singers:
The participants have the possibility to get practical experience on stage, without being under pressure. They precisely learn to write and to interpret jazz charts, - to appoint their own key, to handle with the stage technique (micro, amplifier, mixing console…) to communicate with the musicians at a live situation and to hold their ground in front of public.
Under the instruction of a professional jazz trio (piano. bass, drum) repertoires are -worked at, reaching from classic standard styles over pop-ballads and musicals up to modern jazz. We train the correct timing, phrasing and arranging for the students to get a feeling for making interactive music and improvisation. We ask you to bring the notes of the desired piece in triplicates.

Vocal-Sessions:
The "Vocal-Session" offers singers a regular possibility to enlarge their practical work on stage and to join real public. Potential interested people can get an impression of our work. The session is opened by a short organized program part, than the stage is open for everyone! The same colleagues that have practiced with you a t the "Live-Music-Training For Singers" at the Landesmusikakademie will now attend you, as the have a lot of experience with non professional singers , so do not forget to bring the notes in triplicates. Musicians, students of other colleagues and choirs are always very welcome!

Theory - Special For Singers:
The participants of the course, learn qualify and hear intervals, cords, scales, they get to know the system of the jazz cord symbols they qualify keys, transpose notes and learn the typical rhythmic and the tees of the different styles(Blues, Swing, Latin, Ballads...)

Berlin SingersExchange:
Since 1996 I organize the Berlin SingersExchange once in a semester in co-operation with the music schools where I am occupied and with diverse Jazz Clubs of Berlin.
Subset participants can contribute to the BSE, where young talents get the opportunity to show their knowledge at -at traditional event places in Berlin. Young artists use this chance to gain experience on stage, to find kindred spirit musicians or even to be discovered by talent searchers as it hasalready happened in the past.

Summer Music- Camp at the Balaton:
There regularly is a Summer Music- Camp in August at the Plattensee in Hungary. It is an intern meeting of students who are interested to deepen and refine everything learned at the semester. They can practice their multi-voice singing and do holidays at the same time at the Balaton.

Step by Step from Budapest to Berlin:
Intercultural musical encounter and -tours of both of my singing classes in Berlin in June 2004 on the occasion of the EU- extension on May 2004. The first tour of this kind took place 2002 where the two classes and the Big Band -Project gave four concerts.

Virtual Phonotheke:
Lots of us suffer of the problem not or only hardly getting good musical material or even not getting to know that it even exists, be it due to a lack of information or of money. That is why I'm planning to do a phonothek build by my students. There will be a list of sound storage medium which are considered worth to be heard and/or instructing.
